City High Remains Unbeaten, Keeps Little Cy-Hawk Trophy With Win at Ames

The Little Cy-Hawk trophy is staying put in Iowa City for another year.
Darren Richardson rushed for three second-half touchdowns as Class 5A sixth-ranked City High broke open a 14-3 halftime game and rolled to a 43-5 win over Ames (1-2) on Friday in Ames.
The win was the second straight in the series for City High which improved to 3-4 against Ames since the teams began playing annually on the eve of the cross-town showdown between Iowa and Iowa State.
City High squeaked out a 28-25 win over the Little Cyclones in the last meeting in 2019.
There was no late drama on Friday as City High (3-0) scored the first of two defensive touchdowns less than 30 seconds into the game and never trailed while continuing an impressive start to the season.
Coming off two-win seasons each of the past four years City High has outscored opponents 152-5 during a 3-0 start this season.
City High struck early on Friday when junior linebacker Ben Kueter scooped up a fumble on the game’s opening possession and went 39 yards for a touchdown.
The Little Hawks took a 14-3 lead on a 6-yard Ronnie Major touchdown run.
City High took that14-3 lead into the locker room at halftime after Alex Knudtson stopped a late Ames scoring threat when he picked off a Dallas Sauser pass in the end zone.
Senior defensive end Jacob Williamson sparked City High early in the third quarter returning an interception 60 yards for a touchdown that pushed the lead to 21-3.
Richardson took over from their as the senior running back scored on touchdown runs of 3, 29 and 76 yards.
The 43 points are the most ever for City High in the series with Ames at the most for either team since the Little Cyclones scored 56 in 2017.
City High will host West Des Moines Dowling (1-2) on Friday.
The Maroons fell to Ankeny 27-13 on Friday.
