After finishing second in Class 5A a year ago Liberty High will start 2021 number one in the largest class in the state.

Coming off a 24-3 season and runner-up finish in 5A in 2020 Liberty High was No. 1 in the 5A preseason volleyball rankings released on Monday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The Lightning return six players with starting experience including their top three hitters led by all-state juniors Cassidy Hartman and Shelby Kimm.

Liberty High joins West High and Clear Creek Amana as Your Prep Sports area teams in the preseason rankings.

West High is No. 11 in the 5A rankings after finishing 13-15 last season while Clear Creek Amana opens the year ranked eighth in the Class 4A rankings following a 25-6 season last fall.

Other top-ranked teams in the preseason rankings include North Scott (4A), Sergeant Bluff-Luton (3A), Dike-New Hartford (2A) and Burlington Notre Dame (1A).
