Another Joens sister is headed to Ames.
City High junior standout Kelsey Joens announced on Sunday that she would be following older sisters Ashley and Aubrey to Iowa State committing to the Cyclones with a post on social media.
“I’m excited to announce that I have committed to Iowa State University to continue my athletic and academic career,” Joens wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to all my coaches that have helped me along the way. Can’t wait to play for Coach Fennelly and in front of the best fan base! Go Cyclones.”
Already a two-year starter Joens emerged as one of the top players in the state last season.
After averaging 10.5 points per game as a freshman Joens ranked eighth in Class 5A in scoring averaging 18.7 points per game last season while earning second team all-state honors from both the Iowa Girls Coaches Association and the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association.
The 5-foot-10 Joens was a unanimous Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division pick as a sophomore after scoring in double figures in all 15 games and scoring 20 or more points six times while helping the Little Hawks to a 10-5 record.
Joens shot 40 percent from the field and 76 percent from the free throw line last season and averaged a career-high 5.5 rebounds per game and led City High with 3.3 assists and 2 steals per game.
The Joens connection has been a good one for Iowa State.
Ashley Joens is a senior for the Cyclones and is coming off a junior season in which she earned all-American honors and won the 2021 Cheryl Miller Award as the nation’s best small forward.
Aubrey Joens is a sophomore at Iowa State and appeared in 26 games a year ago averaging 5 points and 2 rebounds per game.
