A spot on the Class 4A all-state first team was a well-deserved honor for West High senior standout Marcus Morgan.

What was perhaps as equally as fitting for Morgan as the all-state selection was that it came as a utility selection.

Morgan was named to the Class 4A first-team as a utility selection by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association on Tuesday following a senior season when the Iowa recruit did it all for the Trojans.

In his final prep season Morgan led West High in nine offensive categories as well as innings pitched, ERA, WHIP and strikeouts while helping the Trojans to a 22-15 record.

Morgan hit .396 with six home runs and 48 RBI while leading the Trojans with a .517 on-base percentage and a .658 slugging percentage.

On the mound Morgan went 4-2 with a 1.48 ERA and .94 ERA while striking out 108 in 56 2/3 innings.

Morgan was joined on the Class 4A team by City High juniors Cade Obermueller and Gable Mitchell who were both third-team selections.

Mitchell earned third team honors as an infielder after hitting .352 with nine extra-base hits, 30 RBI and 41 runs scored.

Obermueller was a third team pick as a pitcher after going 4-1 with a 1.65 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while striking out 36 in 29 2/3 innings.
