Over the past half decade Ayana Lindsey, Carey Koenig and Ella Cook helped elevate the City High softball program to new heights.
Last week the Little Hawk trio of five-year starters closed their prep playing careers at the state tournament in Fort Dodge.
On Wednesday that threesome was recognized a final time for their run of excellence.
Lindsey, Koenig and Cook all earned all-state honors from the Iowa Girls Coaches Association on Wednesday joining Liberty High senior Kara Maiers and West High senior Liv Williams as area honorees in Class 5A.
Koenig and Lindsey were each selected to the Class 5A first team while Cook was a second-team selection after the trio helped City High to a 34-8 record and the third state tournament appearance in four seasons.
After helping City High snap a string of three consecutive losing seasons as eighth graders, Koenig, Lindsey and Cook led the Little Hawks to a combined 114-40 mark the past four seasons that featured state tournament trips in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
Prior to the 2018 City High had appeared at the state tournament just twice, most recently in 2001.
Lindsey earned all-state honors for the fourth consecutive season and was a first-team pick for the third year in a row.
The Northwestern recruit hit .348 with four home runs, 22 RBI and scored a team-leading 54 runs.
Lindsey led 5A with 55 stolen bases and also went 15-4 with a 1.46 ERA and .95 WHIP while striking out 132 in 115 innings in the circle.
A third-team all-state pick as a freshman, Koenig also earned first team honors for the third year in a row after hitting .384 with a team-high eight home runs and 52 RBI.
The senior catcher had 22 extra-base hits and tied with Lindsey for the team lead with 22 walks while posting a .470 on-base and .696 slugging percentage.
Cook was named to the 5A second team for the second straight season after a stellar year in which she hit .441 with a team-leading 23 extra-base hits.
The senior pitcher and infielder had eight home runs, 59 RBI and led the Little Hawks with a .764 slugging percentage.
Cook was perhaps at her best in the circle where she went 18-4 with a 1.38 ERA and .87 WHIP.
The right-hander had a City High single season record 190 strikeouts in 131 2/3 innings ranking third in 5A in strikeouts and 2nd in opponents batting average at .140.
Maiers was named to the 5A second team to earn all-state honors for the second year in a row.
The senior pitcher went 7-3 with a 1.25 ERA and .96 WHIP in an injury-shortened season that saw her limited to 72 2/3 innings.
Maiers still struck out 109 batters and held opponents to a .158 batting average.
Williams was a first-time all-state selection after being named to the 5A third team.
The West High senior first baseman hit .387 with 13 extra-base hits, 24 RBI and 14 walks.
