Substate Baseball Roundup: Linn-Mar Edges Liberty High in Substate Opener

Linn-Mar snapped a tie game with a pair of sixth inning runs on its way to a 3-2 win over Liberty High in a Class 4A, Substate 4 opener on Friday in North Liberty.
Linn-Mar (17-22) advanced to the Substate 4 semifinal with the win and will take on Cedar Rapids Kennedy (22-15) on Monday at 7 p.m. while Liberty High closed the season (24-13)
Zach Wray tripled and Kane Deutmeyer had an RBI double and later scored a run in the two-run Lion sixth that snapped a 1-1 tie.
That was enough for Linn-Mar senior Colin Streff who limited Liberty High to two runs on four hits while striking out six without issuing a walk in a complete game win.
Liberty High made a final rally in the sixth, cutting the lead to 3-2 on an RBI double by Keian Secrist with two out but Jack Funke lined back to Streff to end the game.
Ethan O’Donnell took the loss for Liberty High allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five and walking three in 6 1/3 innings.
Funke and Secrist each had a hit and drove in a run while Luke Meyers and Brody Fishman scored runs for the Lightning.
