Substate Baseball Roundup: City High Shuts Out Davenport North in Postseason Opener

City High exploded for eight runs in the second inning on its way to a 9-0 win over Davenport North in a Class 4A, Substate 6 opening round contest on Friday at Mercer Park in Iowa City.
Class 4A No. 10 City High (28-13) advances to the substate semifinal with the win and win host Burlington (27-6) on Monday at 7 p.m. for a spot in the Substate 6 title game.
Burlington defeated Davenport Central 9-2 in the opening round on Monday while top-seeded Ottumwa won 1-0 over Cedar Rapids Kennedy to earn a bye to the title game.
John Klosterman tossed five shutout innings on Friday allowing just two hits and striking out eight as City High moved two wins away from a return to the state tournament.
Gavin Koch struck out three in two hitless innings of relief to secure the shutout.
City High broke open a scoreless game with eight runs in the second inning, taking advantage of three Wildcat errors in the inning.
Cedric Dunnwald and Gable Mitchell each had a two-run singles during the eight-run outburst.
Carter Seaton went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Mitchell went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead City High.
Dunnwald had a hit and drove in two runs while Koch had a hit, drove in a run and scored twice.
Joey Bouska and Ben Kueter each had hits and scored runs while Jacob Means added a hit, Cade Obermueller scored a run and Klosterman drove in a run.
