Regional Softball Roundup: Top-ranked Davenport Assumption Too Much for Solon
Your Prep Sports
After making quick work of its first two postseason foes eighth-ranked Solon ran into a buzzsaw on Monday in top-ranked Davenport Assumption.
Class 3A No. 1 Assumption scored four runs in each of the first two innings and returned to the state tournament for the sixth consecutive season with a 12-0 four-inning win over Solon in the Region 7 title game at St. Vincent Athletic Complex in Davenport.
Solon (26-13) had its sights set on snapping a four-year state tournament drought but Assumption (37-3) was too much as the Knights scored double digit runs for the fifth straight game while stretching their winning streak to nine.
Assumption had four hits and took advantage of a pair of walks in a four-run first inning that featured a solo home run by senior third baseman Anna Wohlers, her 20th of the season.
The Knights added four runs in the second, the big blow a three-run inside-the-park homerun by Maddie Loken.
Assumption ended the game early with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Solon got hits from Hilary Wilson, Carly Ellison, Kendall Jensen and Addie Miller as Assumption pitcher Bella Nigey struck out six and didn’t walk a batter in a complete game.
Solon 000 0 – 0 4 2
Davenport Assumption 440 4 – 12 12 2
