Solon Finishes Runner-up at Class 3A State Golf Tournament

Playing at the state golf tournament for the first time in more than a decade Solon looked a lot more like a team loaded with seasoned postseason veterans than a young squad making its state meet debut.
In its first state tournament trip since 2009 Solon followed up a strong opening round with an impressive day-two performance on Friday to secure a runner-up at the Class 3A state tournament at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown.
Solon shot a 331 on Friday to finish with a two-day total of 656 at the 36-hole event.
Gilbert pulled away to win the team title with a 627, shooting a round-two low of 316 on Friday.
Solon posted the second best score behind Gilbert on both days, following up an opening-round 325 on Thursday with its 331 on Friday to finish 13 strokes in front of third-place Spirit Lake.
MOC-Floyd Valley was fourth with a 682 and Monticello was fifth with a 685.
Freshman Jack McCarty shot a 78 on Friday and finished sixth in the individual standings with a two-day total of 153.
McCarty opened with a 38 on the front nine on Friday and closed with a 40 while finishing one stroke in front of Pella junior Will Simpson who was seventh.
Solon put a trio of players in the top-15 with sophomore Mac McCarty and junior Frank Haege Jr. each shooting 166 to finish in a tie for 15th.
Mac McCarty carded his second consecutive round of 83 on Friday while Haege shot an 85 on Friday after opening with an 81 on Thursday.
Senior Stetson McIlravy shot back-to-back 86s and finished tied for 23rd with a two-day score of 172.
Waverly-Shell Rock junior Hogan Hansen won the individual atitle with a 145.
Hansen led by three strokes after firing a two-over-par 72 on Thursday and closed out the title with a 73 on Friday to finish two strokes in front of Spirit Lake senior Jackson Laven.
