Solon Second After Opening Day at State Golf Tournament

In its first appearance at the state golf tournament in more than a decade Solon hasn’t looked anything like a newcomer.
Solon fired a 325 on the opening day of the Class 3A state tournament at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown on Thursday and sits second after one day at the 36-hole event.
Freshman Jack McCarty fired a five-over-par 75 to lead Solon which is 14 strokes behind day-one leader Gilbert at the 10-team meet.
Gilbert had four players shoot a 79 or better while posting an opening-round score of 311.
Playing at the state tournament for the first time since 2009, Solon has positioned itself for some hardware.
The opening-day 325 by Solon is three strokes in front of Spirit Lake and 14 clear of fourth-place Monticello opening the final day of competition on Friday.
McCarty is in a three-way tie for second place in the individual title race after his opening-round 75.
Jackson Laven of Spirit Lake and Gilbert sophomore Brock Snyder also shot a 75 on Thursday.
Waverly-Shell Rock junior Hogan Hansen is the individual leader after an opening-round 72 on Thursday.
McCarty had five bogeys while shooting a 39 on the front nine before firing a one-over-par 36 on the back nine that featured a birdie on the par-four 18th.
Junior Frank Haege Jr. shot an 81 is tied for 13th place while sophomore Mac McCarty is tied for 17th after an opening-round 83.
Stetson McIlravy shot an 86 and Brennan Heesch a 90 for the Spartans.
