City High will open the softball season on Tuesday and the Little Hawks will do so as a top-five team.

City High was tabbed fifth in Class 5A in the preseason softball rankings released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union on Monday.

The Little Hawks were 18-5 a year ago and open the season behind top-ranked Fort Dodge, Muscatine, Waukee and Indianola in the 5A rankings.

City High’s opening night opponent Liberty High, fresh off a 17-9 season that ended with a 1-0 loss to eventual state champion Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the regional title game, opens the season ranked eighth in 5A.

Regina is the only other Your Prep Sports area team in the pre-season rankings.

The Regals were 9-14 last season and open the year ranked No. 12 in Class 2A.

Other top-ranked teams in the first rankings of the season are Winterset (4A), Williamsburg (3A), Louisa-Muscatine (2A) and Newell-Fonda (1A).
