Friday State Track Notebook: City High Posts a Pair of Fourth-place Finishes

DES MOINES – Relays played a central role in a resurgent regular season for the City High track team.
Not surprisingly it has been relays that have City High closing in on its most success showing at the state meet in recent history.
City High posted a top-four relay finish for the second consecutive day on Friday finishing fourth in the distance medley at the Class 4A state meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
The fourth-place distance medley finish combined with a fourth-place performance from senior Raph Hamilton in the shot put pushed City High into 11th place in the 4A team standings with 17 points.
City High scored 16 points in an 18th place finish at the 2019 state meet.
The City High distance medley team of Isaac Rohret, Akili Mattox, Jovan Harris and Ammon Smith finished fourth in a season-best time of 3:32.74.
City High took more than two seconds of its previous top time that came in a runner-up Drake Relays finish last month while finishing behind Cedar Falls, Ames and Liberty High.
Hamilton closed his career with his first career state medal finishing fourth in the shot put with a mark of 53-10 ¾.
City High capped its strong day by qualifying its 4×100 relay team for Saturday’s finals.
Liberty High Earns Relay Medal
The Liberty High girls team collected its first relay medal of the meet with a fourth-place finish in the distance medley relay in a time of 4:11.89.
Liberty High’s foursome of Chaise Lange, Brynlee Slockett, Isabelle Woody and Ashlyn Keeney finished behind Mississippi Valley Conference rivals Cedar Rapids Prairie (4:09.1) and Dubuque Hempstead (4:11.01) and Southeast Polk (4:11.05).
Top 10 Team Scores
The Liberty High boys and girls, the City High boys and the Clear Creek Amana boys are all among the area teams that will push for top-10 team finishes on Saturday.
Liberty High sits in a four-way tie for ninth with 15 points in the Class 4A girls standings while Solon is in a three-way tie for first in the 3A girls standings.
The Liberty High boys are in a four-way tie for seventh in Class 4A with 18 points while Clear Creek Amana is sixth in the 3A boys team standings with 17 points.
