On Saturday the West High tennis team will attempt to earn a return trip to the state tournament.
First the Trojans had to take care of some individual business.
West High did just that on Wednesday sweeping the singles and doubles titles at the Class 2A, Region 8 meet at North Scott.
Sophomore Ella De Young won the singles title while the sister duo of Caroline Mascardo and Julianna Mascardo claimed the doubles title for West High.
The singles and doubles title sweep marked the fourth consecutive season West High had accomplished that feat at the regional meet and sends both De Young and the Mascardo doubles team to the Class 2A state individual tournament on June 2 and 3 at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center in Iowa City.
De Young remained unbeaten in singles play this season winning three consecutive regional matches without dropping a set.
The sophomore standout defeated Riley O’Donnell of Dubuque Senior 6-0, 6-0 in the championship match.
Junior Caroline Mascardo and sophomore Julianna Mascardo advanced to the state meet for the first time as a doubles team with a 6-0, 6-2 win over the Dubuque Senior team of Natalie Kaiser and Maddy Sampson.
Caroline Mascardo was a state doubles participant two seasons ago as a freshman going 1-2 at the state meet.
City High and Liberty High each had singles players advance to the state meet.
City High junior Sarah Dockery-Jackson won the Region 7 singles title at Bettendorf with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Dubuque Hempstead sophomore Sydney Thoms in the title match.
Liberty High freshman Ella Gilbert secured a spot at the state meet with a runner-up finish at the Region 6 meet at Pleasant Valley.
Pleasant Valley freshman Lauren Masengrab defeated Gilbert 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in the championship match.
