A strong performance at the first Mississippi Divisional Meet on Monday has Liberty High closing in on the first conference title in program history.

Liberty High shot a 332 on Monday at Bunker Hill Golf Course in Dubuque and will enter the final competition of the three-event MVC conference schedule with an eight-stroke lead on Western Dubuque for the Mississippi Division.

Western Dubuque shot a division-leading 174 at the MVC Super Meet last week and entered play on Monday leading Liberty High and Cedar Falls by five strokes.

That lead disappeared quickly as the Lightning shot 12 strokes better than Western Dubuque and 18 strokes better than Cedar Falls on Monday.

The Lightning have a two-even total of 511 entering the final divisional meet on Monday while Western Dubuque is second with a 519 followed by Cedar Falls with a 529 and Cedar Rapids Washington with a 534.

City High shot a 386 on Monday and is eighth in the divisional with a two-event score of 607.

Bella Pettersen fired an impressive 67 on Monday to earn medalist honors while teammate Neely Maurus shot a 77 and Brianna Butterfield carded an 88 for the Lightning.

Pettersen entered play on Monday trailing Cedar Falls Amara Lytle by two strokes for the individual lead and tied with Tatum Depuydt and Maurus after shooting a 38 at the MVC Super Meet.

With her 67 on Monday Pettersen will enter the final divisional meet with a two-event score of 105 and a seven-stroke lead on Lytle and an eight-stroke cushion over Depuydt.

Maurus sits fourth in the division with a two-day score of 115.
