Third-place Finish in Distance Medley Highlights Strong Drake Day for Clear Creek Amana

One of the many roles that Ben Robison fills as the head track coach at Clear Creek Amana is the unofficial program historian.
Robison is always on top of those duties, updating school records and recent accomplishments.
With a third-place finish in the distance medley relay at the Drake Relays on Thursday Clear Creek Amana managed to stump, at least briefly its head coach.
“I’m pretty sure the last time we brought Drake Relays medals home was 2010-2011,” Robison said. “It definitely has not been in the last 10 years.”
While Robison wasn’t rock solid with the date of the last top-three Drake Relays finish he was 100 percent certain of one thing – Thursday was the best effort for the Clippers at the Relays under his tutelage.
In addition to the third-place distance medley relay finish Harrison Rosenberg placed 18th in the 110 hurdles and the Clippers finished 19th in the 4×100 relay to highlight an overall strong day for Clear Creek Amana.
“I felt like we competed better than any other time that we have been up to the Relays since I’ve been here,” Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison said. “I was just so proud of the boys and the way they competed.”
Clear Creek Amana set a school record while placing third behind Ames and City High in the distance medley with a time of 3:35.28.
The Clear Creek Amana foursome of Harrison Rosenberg, Gage Freeman, Gavin Zillyette and Tom Johnson improved their seed by seven spots while taking more than two seconds off its previous best time.
Robison praised the work of Johnson on the 800-meter anchor leg.
“Not that all of them didn’t have a good day but Tom Johnson is an animal, he’s an animal,” Robison said. “He’s really taken it upon himself to fill a hole on our team and it’s been really neat to see.”
Clear Creek Amana finished more than half a second in front of fourth-place Urbandale and was the only non-Class 4A team in the top six.
“I think they still have some room in there to improve which is bizarre to think about,” Robison said. “It’s really going to come down to what we decide to do with a couple of other relays come state time but as it sits right now it’s going to be really hard not to go full steam ahead with that crew doing what they are doing right now.”
The Clear Creek Amana 4×100 relay team of Rosenberg, Ben Swails, Freeman and Alex Figueroa clocked a 44.05 to finish 19th.
