Alumni News is a way for readers to keep tabs on former area standouts as well as honoring those athletes that continue to excel at the next level.
Ashley Joens
City High graduate Ashley Joens was named the 2021 Cheryl Miller Award winner which honors the best small forward in NCAA Division I on Sunday following a historic junior season in which she averaged a school-record 24.2 points per game while helping Iowa State reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
A 6-foot junior Joens ranked fifth nationally in scoring at 24.1 points per game, averaged 9.5 rebounds per game and shot a career-high 46 percent from the field and 88 percent from the free throw line.
Billy Friis
West Branch graduate and current Central College sophomore Billy Friis caught a pair of touchdown passes on Saturday as the Dutch defeated Simpson 49-14 in its spring season opener.
Friis caught touchdown passes of seven and two yards from quarterback Blaine Hawkins in the first half with his second touchdown grab giving Central a 21-0 lead with 11:47 left in the second quarter.
Adara Opiola
West High graduate and current Northern Iowa senior Adara Opiola had a grand slam on Saturday as the Panthers completed a three-game sweep of Evansville with a 9-1 win.
Opiola had two hits and drove in six runs in the sweep of Evansville and the senior is hitting .241 with nine RBI on the season.
