The Your Prep Sports area wrestling team honors the top wrestlers in the area for their performance on the mat this season.
Some of the best wrestlers in the state competed right here in the Your Prep Sports area this season with three area wrestlers capping unbeaten seasons with state titles and six others earning medals at the state meet.
This year’s edition of the Your Prep Sports area wrestling team features a three-time state champion and a pair of two-time state champs.
Solon junior Hayden Taylor is the Your Prep Sports area wrestler of the year after finishing 39-0 to complete a second consecutive unbeaten season.
Taylor is the first three-time champion in Solon history and now owns two of the three unbeaten season in program history after defeating second-ranked Wyatt Appleseth of Panorama 7-2 in Class 2A, 160-pound title match.
2021 Your Prep Sports Area Wrestling Team
106 – Kael Kurtz (15-2) Fr., City High: Won 13 consecutive matches to open his high school career and placed seventh at the Class 3A state tournament going 3-2 in his debut appearance.
113 – Cale Seaton (16-2) Fr., City High: Capped a stellar freshman season by going 5-1 and placing third at the Class 3A state tournament with the lone loss coming to the unbeaten state champion in the quarterfinals.
120 – Parker McBride (8-2) Jr, West High: Won district title to earn a second consecutive trip to the state meet where he went 1-2.
126 – Grant O’Dell (14-3) Jr., West High: Was unbeaten through the state semifinal before an injury forced him to default his final two matches at the state tournament but still earned a third consecutive medal with a sixth-place finish.
132 – Kael Scranton (10-4) Jr., West High: In his first season at West High Scranton won the first district title of his career before going 1-2 at the state meet.
138 – Hunter Garvin (16-0) Jr., West High: Turned in one of the most dominating seasons in West High history en route to a second consecutive state title. Garvin won every match by fall or tech fall, a first in West High history, and is 49-3 over the past two season and 88-7 in his career.
145 – Ryan Ott (11-5) Soph., City High: Earned the first state meet appearance of his career with a runner-up finish at the district meet.
152 – Graham Gambrall (11-4) Sr., West High: An Oregon State recruit, Gambrall capped a brilliant career that included 131 wins, four state medals and a state title with a fourth-place finish at the 3A state meet.
*160 – Hayden Taylor (39-0), Jr., Solon: Already the most decorated wrestler in Solon history Taylor completed his second consecutive unbeaten season with the third straight Class 2A state title of his career. Taylor didn’t allow a takedown or reversal all season while extending his winning streak to 111 consecutive victories.
170 – Ashton Barker (16-1), Sr., West High: An Iowa State signee, Barker finished third at the Class 3A state meet for the third consecutive season with his lone loss an 8-4 semifinal setback to 2020 state champion and 2021 Mickey Griffith from Des Moines Lincoln.
182 – Mason Applegate (6-4), Jr., West High: Earned a district championship to secure the first state tournament appearance of his career where he went 1-2 in Class 3A.
195 – Ben Kueter (11-0) Soph., City High: Improved to 35-0 in his career with a second consecutive state after jumping up three weight classes to become the first back-to-back City High champion since Kyle Anson in 2005
220 – Gage Marty (35-11) Jr., Solon: Went 3-3 at the state meet to collect a second state medal in as many trips with a sixth-place finish in Class 2A and had six losses on the season to Class 1A and 2A champions.
285 – Nash Altman (23-18) Sr., Solon: Finished third at the district meet with loss to the eventual Class 3A state champion and seventh place finisher and a win over an opponent with a 37-6 mark.
