West High is well known for playing its best basketball at the state tournament.
The Trojans continued that tradition this season and a big reason for the continued state tournament success was the play of senior point guard Matayia Tellis.
On Friday evening Tellis was recognized for her strong state tournament when she was named to the Class 5A all-tournament team following the 5A title game.
Tellis was the only West High player to score in double figures in both state tournament games this week scoring 12 in a quarterfinal win over Waterloo West and adding 10 in a semifinal loss to Johnston.
The 5-foot-5 Tellis averaged 11 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and two assists per game over in two games at state this week helping West High reach the state semifinals for the sixth time in 11 seasons.
Tellis had five steals in the quarterfinal win over Waterloo West turning one into a fast break layup that put West High up by four points in the final 30 seconds.
