Senior Weigel Leads City High On Impressive Day at District Meet

What a day for the City High swimming program and its senior leader on Saturday.
City High senior Isaac Weigel won a pair of individual titles and helped the Little Hawks to a pair of relay crowns as City High won six events and qualified 13 entries for the state meet at the district meet in Clinton.
Weigel was named district athlete of the year following his four gold medal performance that helped City High to a third-place team finish with 365 points.
Pleasant Valley used its balance and depth to win the team title with 460 points while Cedar Rapids Washington was runner-up with 371.
However, Saturday was all about Weigel and his City High teammates.
Weigel won titles in the 200 IM and 100 freestyle and helped City High win both the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay on his way to earning athlete of the year honors.
Caleb Coons won the 100 backstroke and Kento Yahashiri added a title in 100 breaststroke as City High won six of 11 events.
After helping City High to a title in the 200 medley relay in 1:36.96 Weigel won his first individual championship in the 200 IM in a time of 1:54.12 finishing more than a second in front of runner-up Parker Paulson of Pleasant Valley.
Weigel added a title in the 100 freestyle in 46.7 to edge Muscatine senior Ryan Boeding who was second in 47.43.
The huge day for Weigel was capped by helping the Little Hawks’ 400 freestyle relay team to a title in 3:11.08 which was the fourth fastest qualifying time in the state. Pleasant Valley was runner-up in 3:11.56.
Coons won the 100 backstroke in a time of 51.62, nearly two seconds faster than runner-up Owen Chiles who posted a time of 53.52.
Coons also qualified for state in the 100 butterfly placing fourth in a time of 52.25 on Saturday.
Yahashiri won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.61 holding off Cedar Rapids Washington sophomore Brian Foerester who was second in 1:01.22.
Freshman Joe Polyak had an impressive district debut for City High posting a pair of top-three finishes and qualifying for state in both events.
Polyak was runner-up in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:48 and finished third in the 200 IM in 1:58.22.
Junior Bryce Edens also qualified in two individual events, placing fourth in the 50 freestyle in 22.1 and fourth in the 100 freestyle in 48.33.
Chase Loftus qualified for state in the 100 breaststroke after placing sixth in a time of 1:03.12.
The State Swimming Meet will be held February 13 at Linn-Mar High School in Marion.
