CCA’s Williams Makes History as First State Medalist

What a weekend for the Clear Creek Amana girls wrestling team.
Caitlyn Williams capped a historic performance for the Clippers at the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Girls State Tournament by becoming the first state medalist in program history on Saturday at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
Williams finished fourth at 170 pounds helping Clear Creek Amana finish 15th in the team standings.
Seven of the nine wrestlers the Clippers sent to state scored points and six finished with .500 or better records in state matches as Clear Creek Amana racked up 62 team points.
Williams led the way winning three consecutive matches in the consolation bracket following a quarterfinal loss to Morgan Smith of Denver on Saturday morning.
The junior won a 5-3 decision over Camielle Wiedow of Decorah and posted first-period falls of Elizabeth Batterson of Ottumwa and Paris Dean of Spencer to reach the consolation final.
Williams (14-5) fell to Virginia Cacho of Muscatine via first-period fall in the third-place match.
Teammate Laura Lefleur also advanced to the second day for the two-day event falling to West Branch sophomore Emmersen Thomas (13-5) 9-8 in a fifth-round consolation match at 106 pounds.
Lefleur went 3-2 at the state tournament while Thomas posted a 4-2 mark at 106 pounds falling to Abby Blint of Mount Pleasant via fall in the sixth round of the consolation bracket.
West High’s Emma Barker and Solon’s Maddy Hoyle and Addison Burden all concluded their state tournament runs on Saturday.
Barker finished 2-2 at 152 pounds while Hoyle (15-11) went 5-2 at 120 pounds for the Spartans falling to Angeleena Rasmussen of Sioux City East in the a sixth-round consolation match.
Burden (12-7) went 3-2 at the state meeting reaching the fifth-round of the consolation bracket at 132 pounds.
