More than 450 wrestlers from better than 100 schools around the state converged on Xtream Arena in Coralville Friday for the opening day of the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Girls State Tournament.

Seven wrestlers from four different Your Prep Sports area programs are among those headed back to chase a spot on the medal stand on Saturday.

Clear Creek Amana, Solon, West Branch and West High all kept wrestlers alive to the second day of competition at the two-day event with a pair of area wrestlers advancing to the quarterfinals.

West High junior Emma Barker and Clear Creek Amana junior Caitlyn Williams will each wrestler in the quarterfinals on Saturday with competition set to begin at 10 a.m.

The final sessions that will include championship matches is schedule for 4 p.m.

Barker (2-0) advanced to the 152-pound quarterfinals with a pair of pins on Friday.

Following an opening-round bye Barker pinned North Scott senior Madison Ahrens in 2:59 and needed 3:46 to pin Josie Jecklin of Western Dubuque.

Barker will face Keeley Kehrli (22-4) of East Buchanan in the quarterfinals.

Williams (11-3) moved to the 170-pound quarterfinals by pinning Emma Jones of Waverly-Shell Rock in 39 seconds in the opening round.

Williams will face Morgan Smith (11-5) of Denver in the quarterfinals.

The win by Williams was part of a strong opening day for Clear Creek Amana which sends three wrestlers into Saturday and sits 12^th in the team standings with 48 points after day one.

Freshman 106-pounder Laura Lefleur and senior 126-pound Grace Bedford each remaining alive in the consolation bracket for Clear Creek Amana.

Lefleur (9-7) went 3-1 on Friday including a memorable 33-28 decision over Evelyn Kramer of South Central Calhoun in the second round.

Beford (14-5) went 4-1 on Friday posting three consecutive consolation wins following a 5-1 loss to Khylie Wainwright of North Scott in the second round.

Solon has a pair of wrestlers alive in the consolation bracket in sophomore 132-pounder Addison Burden (12-6) and freshman Maddy Hoyle (14-10) at 120 pounds.

Burden went 4-1 on Friday with three consecutive consolation wins following a second-round loss while Burden went 3-1 winning three straight matches after a 4-3 loss in the second round.

The lone West Branch participant is still competing on Saturday as sophomore 106-pounder Emmersen Thomas (12-4) bounced back from a third-round loss to pin Kennedyy Pahl of Des Moines Roosevelt in a consolation match.
