For the first time in program history there will be a change atop the Liberty High football program.
Liberty High announced in a statement on Friday that Jeff Gordon had stepped down as head coach after five years leading the program, including the only three varsity seasons in school history.
“We want to thank head coach Jeff Gordon for the time, passion and energy he has put into the Liberty football program for the past five years,” Liberty High activities director Mike Morrison wrote in a statement. “He has laid the foundation for Liberty football. Coach Gordon has resigned his position as head football coach and is looking forward to spending more time with his family. He has built lifelong memories and relationships in the Liberty football program.”
Gordon began coaching at Liberty High before the school had officially opened.
He directed the Liberty High freshman and sophomores teams before being named the first varsity head coach in program history in January of 2018.
Gordon compiled a 12-12 record in the first three seasons in program history helping the Lightning reach a number of program firsts.
Following a 3-6 debut season in 2018 Liberty High went 7-3 and made the first playoff appearance in program history in 2019 falling to Solon in the Class 3A opening round.
Liberty High went 2-3 in its first season in Class 4A last fall posting wins over Cedar Rapids Jefferson and City High and fell to Dubuque Hempstead 42-7 in its playoff opener.
