What a statement for West Branch to open the new year.
Class 2A fourth-ranked West Branch built a 29-22 halftime lead and pulled away for a 51-40 win over 3A No. 6 West Liberty in a River Valley Conference South Division showdown in West Liberty on Tuesday.
The win was the fifth straight for West Branch and improved the Bears to 8-1 on the season and in RVC play while West Liberty dropped to 5-3 and 5-2 in conference play.
Taya Young led three West Branch players in double figures with 16 points and also grabbed eight rebounds and had three steals.
Sasha Koenig had 15 points and four assists while Rylan Druecker added 10 points, five rebounds and three steals for the Bears.
Delaynie Luneckas had six points, five rebounds, three assists and five blocked shots in the win.
