A successful season for Solon that included a seven-game winning streak and a spot in the Class 2A quarterfinals was built around a stingy defense, a power running game and a big-play pass attack.
The individual awards the Spartans hauled in on Tuesday were a direct reflection of that style of play.
Solon had five players earn all-state honors in Class 2A when the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association released its postseason honors on Tuesday.
Among those honored were the top rusher, receiver and tackler and stalwarts on both the offensive and defensive lines for a Solon team that posted a 7-3 record and fell to eventual champion Waukon in the 2A quarterfinals.
Senior Carson Shive headlined the list of all-state picks earning first-team defensive honors after making a team-high 78 tackles from his inside linebacker spot.
The 6-foot, 205-pound Shive had 58 solo tackle including a team-high 12 for loss and four sacks and also recovered two fumbles.
Seniors Jackson Ryan, Colton Hoffman and Ben Cusick were all second-team selections while junior offensive lineman Gage Marty was named to the 3A third team.
Ryan was a second-team pick as a running back after rushing for a team-leading 1,017 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging 6.6 yards per carry.
Hoffman was a second-team selection as a wide receiver after a breakthrough season in which he caught 29 passes for 678 yards and 11 touchdowns.
A versatile two-way player, Hoffman also made 44.5 stops from his linebacker spot while averaging 23.4 receptions as a receiver.
Cusick was named to the second team defense after his own breakthrough season that included a team-high 5.5 sacks.
A 6-foot-3, 215-pound defensive end, Cusick made 35 tackles, 29 of which were solo stops, and had 11 tackles for loss.
The 5-foot-11, 215-pound Marty was a third-team pick as an offensive lineman after helping the Spartans rush for 235 yards and nearly three touchdowns per game.
