Calia Clubb considers herself to be quite thorough.
Whether it is athletics, academics or anything else in her schedule the Clear Creek Amana junior approaches it with the same meticulous attitude execution.
So, it come as no surprise that Clubb employed that same diligence in the recruiting process.
“I think the biggest thing for me was I am really big with communication so I really wanted to be able to buckle down and figure out which program and which coaches I would fit best with and would fit best with me,” Clubb said. “That’s probably one of the biggest reasons why I did take so long with my decision.”
Clubb may have taken her time in recruiting but the Clipper standout eventually found everything she was looking for in a future home.
The 6-foot-1 Clubb announced she had verbally commitment to Illinois State on Sunday a week after ending her junior season.
“I had power five, ivy league and other division one offers but what drew me to Illinois State was coach (Leah) Johnson and her program and how good of a program she has been able to build,” Clubb said. “Their strength of schedule during the preseason and the way they can dominate in the regular season was impressive to me.”
A regular in the Clipper lineup since her freshman season Clubb led Clear Creek Amana in kills for the third consecutive season this fall on her way to being a unanimous all-WAMAC West Division pick for the second straight season.
Clubb was an honorable mention all-state selection in Class 4A after hammering 351 kills as a sophomore.
In three varsity seasons Clubb has posted 851 kills, 734 digs and 108 ace serves.
She ranked second on the team with 226 digs this fall helping Clear Creek Amana to a 25-6 record.
“One of the biggest pieces for me that I was able to put together this year was my back row,” Clubb said. “I have played back row in the past but this year it was kind of my connecting piece to finish up those little nicks that I needed to put together in order to work on all the correct positioning.”
A member of the Missouri Valley Conference, Illinois State was 22-12 in 2019 and has reached the NCCA Tournament each of the past two seasons.
“It’s a great feeling especially when I was able to make that phone call to commit,” Clubb said. “It’s honestly just a weight off my shoulders just because I don’t have to worry about that time management and making all those phone calls. It’s really exciting.”
