Sixth-ranked Dubuque Hempstead Too Much for Liberty High

A week off did nothing to slow down one of the hottest teams in Class 4A.
Senior quarterback Aidan Dunne accounted for five touchdowns as 4A sixth-ranked Dubuque Hempstead stretched its winning streak to six with a 42-7 win over Liberty High on Friday in the playoff opener for both teams at Dalzell Field in Dubuque.
Hempstead improved to 7-1 and advanced to the 4A third round with the win while Liberty High ended its season at 2-3.
Since a week-two loss to Western Dubuque the Mustangs have ripped off seven straight wins, averaging nearly 38 points per game during that stretch.
Dubuque Hempstead jumped out to an early lead on Friday.
After forcing Liberty High to go three-and-out on the opening possession of the game Dunne started the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run with 7:34 left in the opening quarter.
Hempstead made it 14-0 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Zach Sabers that capped a 57-yard drive that was kept alive by a roughing the punter penalty on Liberty High.
Sabers returned an interception 50 yards to set up another 1-yard touchdown run by Dunne.
The senior quarterback connected with Jackson Ostrander on a 3-yard scoring strike with 44 seconds left in the first half that gave Hempstead a 28-0 halftime lead.
Hempstead scored on its first two possessions of the second half to push the lead to 42-0.
The Mustangs marched 77 yards in 74 seconds to start the second half, taking a 35-0 lead on a 45-yard strike from Dunne to Ty Hancock.
Dunne’s fifth touchdown of the game came on a 7-yard run and capped a 78-yard scoring drive that made it 42-0.
Liberty High got on the board in the fourth quarter when sophomore quarterback Tye Hughes found Brody Fishman for a 21-yard touchdown pass.
Fishman also had a 22-yard reception on the 58-yard Liberty High scoring drive.
