Cross Country Roundup: West High, City High Returning to State Meet

With nine consecutive trips to the state meet the last decade was an impressive one for the West High cross country program.
The Trojans picked up right where they left off in 2020.
West High stretched its string of consecutive state meet appearances to an even 10 with a runner-up finish at the Class 4A state qualifying meet at the Dubuque Soccer Complex in Wednesday.
Second-ranked Dubuque Hempstead won the team title with 32 points followed by No. 14 West High with 66 and No. 12 City High with 71.
The third-place finish for City High sends the Little Hawks to the state meet for the 30th time in program history and first since 2016.
West High had three runners in the top 12 on Wednesday while locking up its return trip to Fort Dodge.
Junior Alex McKane returned for the first time in more than two weeks and placed third in a time of 16:10.2 while sophomore Seth Cheney was eighth in 16:27.9.
Caden Noeller added a 12th place finish for West High in a time of 16:34.
City High had a trio of sophomores finish in the top 15 led by Ford Washburn who was seventh in a time of 16:25.5.
Ammon Smith was 11th in 16:33.9 while Truman Thompson was 14th in 16:37.3.
Dubuque Hempstead senior Ryan Winger raced to the individual title in a time of 15:28.9 as the Mustangs put three runners in the top five and pulled away for the team title.
