Clear Creek Amana has been nearly automatic on extra points this season thanks to Anthony Hennes.
Hennes was 21-of-22 on PAT attempts this season after converting on his first five attempts on Friday night against Newton.
The sixth extra point attempt for Hennes and the Clippers on Friday didn’t result in a point on the scoreboard but it meant more than any made kick could.
Leading Newton 41-14 in the fourth quarter Clear Creek Amana coach Gabe Bakker made the call for Hennes to take a knee on his final PAT attempt of the night as a tribute to his father Mike who passed away just six days earlier.
The play didn’t go exactly the way Bakker imagined but it was still a success as Hennes came off the field for the final time on Friday with 41 points on the scoreboard. Mike Hennes wore number 41 during his football playing days.
“We ended up with 41 points and when he came off the field then it was pretty emotional for everybody there,” Bakker said.
According to Bakker, Anthony Hennes played the best game of his career in a 49-3 win over Benton Community last week.
A starting defensive back and leader in the Clippers secondary had 4.5 tackles including one for loss in the win over the Bobcats.
Friday against Newton, playing in a #41 jersey Bakker had made special for the game with help of a community member, Hennes may have been even better.
He had a team-high seven tackles including five solo stops and a sack in a 41-14 win. He hit all five of his extra point attempts and had a pair of touchbacks in seven kickoffs.
“He has played his best football the last two weeks,” Bakker said. “A week ago was the best game he’s had as a Clipper and this last Friday might be the second best to that. He had his whole family in the stands and he played his heart out. He really did.”
The game was emotional for everyone in Clipper blue on Friday.
Senior quarterback Ryan Navara said Friday and the rest of the season is an opportunity to play for Hennes and his family.
“Anthony is my best friend and his father was one of the best guys you will ever meet,” Navara said. “That game and the rest of the season we are playing for him.”
Bakker was pleased with how he saw his players coming together on and off the football field.
“It was hard on a lot of those seniors because Anthony’s dad was a big part of their career’s and their lives but Friday night was a special moment for all of them,” Bakker said. “There is no script for it. We just try to be there and support as much as we can and do what the family kind of needs. We just try to do everything we can to be there for a 17-year old kid that lost his dad.”
Running Wild: West Branch shifted its running game into high gear rushing for 207 yards and seven touchdowns in a 50-14 road win at Maquoketa Valley.
The seven rushing touchdowns are the most for West Branch since the Bears ran for seven scores in a 56-0 win over Wilton on October 17 of 2014.
West Branch senior quarterback Gavin Hierseman ran for three touchdowns and running backs Dominic Culver and Andy Henson each ran for two scores.
