Last February Graham Gambrall secured his status as one of the top wrestlers in the state with an impressive run to a Class 3A state title.
In the months following college coaches took notice and on Tuesday Gambrall locked up his college plans.
A three-time state medalist, Gambrall verbally committed to Oregon State on Tuesday with a post on social media.
“Super excited to announce I have committed to wrestle for coach Pendleton at Oregon State University,” Gambrall wrote on Instagram. “His coaching staff Nate Engel, Mike Kosoy and Isiah Martinez are awesome.”
Gambrall becomes the second West High wrestler to commit to a Division I program in recent weeks following classmate Ashton Barker who committed to South Dakota State last month.
In his first two prep seasons Gambrall won Mississippi Valley Conference and district titles before placing sixth and then eighth at the 3A state meet.
Last season was the breakthrough.
Gambrall won his final 19 matches on his way to his first state title, defeating three top-four ranked wrestlers in consecutive matches to claim the 145-pound title.
After an opening round pin Gambrall beat three-time finalist Ben Monroe of Ankeny Centennial 6-5 in the quarterfinals and defeated top-ranked Deven Streif of North Scott 9-7 in the semifinals.
He won the state title match 10-5 over Ankeny Senior Sam Kallem.
Gambrall owns a 120-36 career record entering his final season and is also a starter on the West High soccer team.
