Clear Creek Amana Comes Up Short in Season Opener at Mount Pleasant

A hectic end of the opening week of the season for the Clear Creek Amana football team concluded with a back-and-forth contest against Mount Pleasant that featured a thrilling fourth quarter.
When the dust settled on a wild week the Clippers came up just shy of a season-opening win.
Clear Creek Amana scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns but had the potential go-ahead two-point conversion attempt fall incomplete in a 28-27 loss to Mount Pleasant on Friday at Evans Field in Mount Pleasant.
The status of the season opener was in limbo for a short time earlier in the week after Clear Creek Amana closed school on Thursday due to concerns over COVID-19.
The game was played as scheduled on Friday and lived up to the hype as the teams exchanged the lead four times in a contest that featured 20 fourth-quarter points and didn’t see either team lead by more than a touchdown.
Clear Creek Amana outgained Mount Pleasant 413 to 371, had more first downs and 22 more rushing yards but committed three turnovers, two in the red zone, while the Panthers didn’t turn the ball over.
Jack Johnson ran for three scores for Mount Pleasant which defeated Clear Creek Amana in the season opener for the second year in a row.
Alex Figueroa ran for 175 yards and three touchdowns for the Clippers scoring on runs of 74, 6 and 7 yards.
Clear Creek Amana led 14-7 at halftime but Mount Pleasant took a 21-14 lead on a 3-yard touchdown run by Johnston with 1:56 left in the third quarter.
Figuera scored twice in a back-and-forth fourth quarter tying the score at 21-all with a 6-yard run with 9:35 left and then pulling the Clippers within a point at 28-27 with a 7-yard run with 6:13 left.
Ryan Navara passed for 155 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 51 yards for the Clippers and Harrison Rosenberg caught four passes for 50 yards and a touchdown.
Gage Freeman had a team-high 9.5 tackles for the Clippers while Nate Beckman added eight stops and Anthony Hennes had 6.5.
T.J. Hansen had a sack for Clear Creek Amana.
