Kara Maiers had her strings of consecutive hitless and scoreless innings come to an end on Monday but the Liberty High junior hurler was still plenty good enough to lead the Lightning to a win over a top-10 opponent.
Maiers tossed five strong innings as Class 5A No. 14 Liberty High defeated Class 5A eighth-ranked Dubuque Hempstead 5-1 in the opener of a Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division doubleheader in Dubuque.
Hempstead (11-5, 7-5 MVC) rallied from an early 3-1 deficit for a 5-4 win in the nightcap to salvage a doubleheader split and snap a five-game losing skid.
Liberty High moved to 12-8 on the season and 8-4 in Valley Division play.
Maiers hadn’t allowed a hit in either of her previous two starts and was coming off a perfect game in her last appearance on Friday against Waterloo West.
The right-hander had gone 20 innings without allowing a run before Hempstead scratched across a run in the fifth.
Maiers allowed one run on four hits while striking out eight in five innings before giving way to Kennedy Daugherty who worked two scoreless innings of relief.
Ashlyn Geasland went 2-for-2 with a double and scored two runs in the win while Ella McLaughlin had two hits and drove in a run in the win.
Brylee Klosterman and Raquel Trolliet each had hits and drove in runs for the Lightning.
Hempstead snapped a 4-4 tie in game two with a run in the sixth inning and held on for the win.
Miranda Jones led Liberty High going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Klosterman went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Mischa Reiners went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in two runs and Tiffany Jones drove in a run for the Lightning.
Kinsley Robertson took the loss allowing five runs on eight hits while striking gout four in six innings.
