Another member of Solon’s Class 3A state runner-up football team has found a future home.
Senior kicker Cael O’Neill announced his verbal commitment to Wartburg College on Tuesday via social media.
“Excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and football careers at Wartburg College,” O’Neill wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to my family, coaches and friends who have all helped and supported me along the way.”
Over the past two seasons O’Neill emerged as one of the most consistent kickers in Class 3A converting on 87 of 92 total attempts.
O’Neill went 83-of-88 on PAT attempts over the past two seasons and made all four of his career field goal attempts with a long of 33.
Nearly 25 percent of 86 career kickoffs by O’Neill went for touchbacks.
The 5-foot-9, 165-pound O’Neill was at his best as a senior, helping Solon to a 12-1 record and a spot in the 3A title game.
O’Neill converted 56-of-58 PAT attempts as a senior and made all three field goal attempts.
Wartburg is coming off a 10-2 season in which the Knights went 7-1 in American Rivers Conference play and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
