A week between its regular season finale and postseason opener wasn’t enough time for Class 2A sixth-ranked West Branch to get rusty.  

If the Bears had picked up any rust during their week off it didn’t take long to shake it off.

West Branch opened up a 37-7 halftime lead and cruised to a 60-16 win over Wilton on Tuesday in a Class 2A, Region 6 quarterfinal in West Branch.

Sasha Koenig poured in a game-high 21 points as West Branch improved to 18-3 with its sixth consecutive win.

West Branch will host Wapello (15-5) in a Region 6 semifinal on Friday at 7 p.m. while Wilton closed its season at 7-16.

Taya Young added 10 points for West Branch as the Bears had eight players score.

Taylor Thein had eight points, Rylan Druecker added seven and Mackenzie Heise had six.

Druecker had three assists and five steals while Koenig had three rebounds, three assists and three steals to go with her game-high 21 points.

Kaiya Luneckas had 10 rebounds and five assists and Young had six steals for West Branch.

Regina Downs Durant in Regional Quarterfinal

It is never easy to beat a team three times in a season.

Regina found that out on Tuesday but the Regals also found a way to get a win.

After defeating Durant by margins of 40 and 19 points during the regular season Regina held on for a 53-46 win over the Wildcats on Tuesday in a Class 2A, Region 5 quarterfinal in Iowa City.

Regina improved to 15-7 with the win and advanced to Friday’s Region 5 semifinal where it will host Bellevue (13-9) at 7 p.m.

The Comets defeated Northeast for the third time this season 62-50 on Tuesday.

Regina won the regular season meeting with Bellevue 33-26 back on January 3.
