Solon Crowns Four Champs, Sends Six to State in Strong District Showing

Solon crowned four champions and qualified six wrestlers for the state tournament in a strong showing at the Class 2A, District 8 meet on Saturday in Washington.
Hayden Taylor, Jax Flynn, Seamus Poynton and Gage Marty all won titles for the Solon as the Spartans sent six wrestlers to the 2A state meet next week and finished runner-up to Davenport Assumption in the team standings.
Davenport Assumption qualified eight wrestlers for the state meet while winning the district team title with 137.5 while Solon was second with 99 and West Liberty was third with 66.5.
Top-ranked Taylor started the list of Solon state qualifiers with a 16-3 major decision over Tipton sophomore Kaleb Nerem in the 145-pound title match.
A defending state champion, Taylor remained unbeaten on the season running his record to 48-0.
Senior Jax Flynn added a title at 170 pounds needing only 1:38 to pin Logan Schimanski of Davenport Assumption in the title match.
Flynn won by tech fall in the semifinals and improved his season record to 45-7 while securing a second consecutive state tournament appearance.
Seamus Poynton and Gage Marty each followed Flynn with district titles to earn their first trips to the state meet.
Ninth-ranked Poynton pinned his way to the 182-pound title, putting fourth-ranked Dylan Jefferson of Keokuk on his back in 1:30 in the championship.
It was the second second pin of Jeffers this postseason for Poynton who improved to 29-9 on the season.
Marty (38-9) earned his first state meet trip with a 9-2 decision over Caden Hill of Davis County in the 195-pound championship.
Junior Caleb Ebert (21-14) and senior Zeb Gnida (44-6) each advanced to the state meet with runner-up finishes.
No. 3 Gnida was pinned by top-ranked Will Esmoil (38-0) of West Liberty in the 152-pound title match.
Ebert dropped a 16-12 decision to Cade Everson of Camanche in the finals at 160 but rebounded to win a 4-3 decision over Ayden Frazer of Washington in a wrestleback to advance to state.
