Solon Wins Six Titles, Qualifies Eight For Districts at Class 2A Sectional Meet

Nearly midway through the championship round at the Class 2A, Sectional 16 meet on Saturday Solon was without a champion or a district qualifier.
The Spartans wouldn’t stay shutout of those categories for long.
Solon won six straight titles starting at 145 pounds while running away with the sectional team title on Saturday at Fairfield.
The Spartans had a finalist in each of the final eight weights going 6-2 in championship matches while advancing all eight finalists to the 2A, District 8 meet next Saturday at Mount Pleasant.
Hayden Taylor, Zeb Gnida, Caleb Ebert, Jax Flynn, Seamus Poynton and Gage Marty won consecutive titles for Solon as the Spartans pulled away to win the team title with 222 points.
Mount Pleasant had two champions and finished second with 151 points while Washington was third with 131.
Top-ranked Hayden Taylor started the string of six straight titles for the Spartans with a second-period pin of Fairfield’s Logan Adam at 145 pounds.
Taylor improved to 46-0 on the season with a pair of pins on Saturday.
Third-ranked Zeb Gnida (43-5) pinned Peyton Cline of Fairfield in 1:17 in the 152-pound championship and Caleb Ebert (19-13) won a 10-9 decision over Ayden Frazer of Washington in the 160-pound title match.
Seventh-ranked Jax Flynn (43-7) kept the title streak going with a 13-4 decision over Jaden Davis of Mount Pleasant at 170 pounds.
Seamus Poynton had perhaps the best performance of any Spartan on Saturday.
Ninth-ranked Poynton (27-9) posted a pair of pins on his way to the 182-pound title including a second-period fall over fourth-ranked Dylan Jeffers (29-5) of Keokuk in the title match.
Sophomore Gage Marty (36-9) collected a 7-1 win over Caden Hill of Davis County to win the 195-pound title before the Spartans closed the meet with a pair of runner-up finishes.
Erich Karsten (26-18) lost to Mount Pleasant’s Samuel Carrasco in the 220-pound championship while Nash Altman (18-18) fell to Brayden Hartman of Washington in the 285-pound title match.
With its team title Solon advanced to the regional dual tournament where it will face Camanche in a regional semifinal on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at West Delaware.
The winner of the Solon and Camanche semifinal will face the winner of the other semifinal between top-ranked West Delaware and Anamosa.
