Last month a trio of Solon skill position players that helped turn the Spartan offense into one of the best in Class 3A all signed letters of intent to continue their playing careers in college.
On Monday another one of the weapons in a loaded Solon offensive arsenal announced his college plans.
Solon running back Seamus Poynton announced his commitment to Division II powerhouse Northwest Missouri State on Monday with a post on social media.
“God has blessed me to announce my commitment to Northwest Missouri State,” Poynton wrote on Twitter. “I’d like to thank the love and support of my family and friends, without them, none of this is possible.”
Poynton rushed for 748 yards and a team-high 13 touchdown as a senior helping Solon to a 12-1 record and a runner-up finish in Class 3A.
The 6-foot, 195-pounder averaged a team-best 5.8 yards per carry and also caught 19 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns.
Poynton had a pair of 100-yard rushing games this season including a 112-yard outing in a state semifinal win over Sergeant Bluff-Luton.
As an outside linebacker Poynton ranked eighth on the team with 22.5 tackles, picked off a pass and recovered a fumble.
A member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, Northwest Missouri State went 12-2 last season reaching the Division II playoffs for the 16th consecutive season falling to Ferris State in the quarterfinals.
The Bearcats won Division II national titles in 2009, 2013, 2015 and 2016.
