Girls Basketball Roundup: West High Downs Gilbert in Season Opener

West High opened the season with a 52-41 win over Class 4A seventh-ranked Gilbert (1-1) on Saturday at Coe College in Cedar Rapids in a non-conference contest that was part of the Rivalry Saturday event.
Class 5A No. 12 West High never trailed on Saturday, building a 14-4 lead after the opening quarter and leading by as many as 19 in the second half.
Audrey Koch had a game-high 15 points to lead West High to go with six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Freshman Meena Tate had 12 points and seven rebounds while Cora Saunders had nine points and Jenna Saunders added eight points.
Emma Bulman had 12 points to lead Gilbert.

West Branch Falls to West Hancock
West Branch pushed Class 2A third-ranked West Hancock to the limit but couldn’t close out a win falling 46-41 in the season opener for both teams on Saturday at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
Eighth-ranked West Branch led 24-22 at halftime and had a nine-point lead in the third quarter but West Hancock outscored the Bears 14-6 in the fourth quarter to escape with the five-point win.
Sasha Koenig had 12 points and seven assists to lead West Branch while Rylan Druecker had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Kaiya Luneckas added five points and 11 rebounds and Mackenzie Heise had nine points and four rebounds for the Bears.
Rachel Leerar had 11 points and Maddie Eisenman added 10 for West Hancock.
