Carey Koenig has spent the past three seasons helping to turn around the City High softball program.
The City High catcher plans to spend the next two summers helping the Little Hawks chase a state title.
This week Koenig announced her plans for her time after City High.
Koenig gave a verbal commitment to play softball at Drake University on Sunday in a post on social media.
“I’m excited and blessed to say that I have verbally committed to continue my academic and athletic career at Drake University,” Koenig wrote on Twitter. “I would like to thank God as well as my parents, coaches and teammates who have supported me along the way. Can’t wait to be a Bulldog.”
Over the past three seasons Koenig has established herself as one of the best players in the state.
A career .389 hitter, Koenig had her breakthrough last season ranking in the top 10 in Class 5A in home runs, RBI, walks and slugging percentage while earning first-team all-state honors as a sophomore.
Koenig ranked third in 5A with 54 RBI last season, fifth with 23 walks and sixth with 13 home runs while her .872 slugging percentage was the ninth highest in 5A.
She hit .466 with 15 doubles while helping City High to a 36-8 record and the best state tournament finish in program history.
Koenig becomes the second City High junior to lock in her college plans in the last few weeks after Ayana Lindsey verbally committed to Northwestern last month.
