FORT DODGE – For some athletes the atmosphere at the state cross country meet can be a bit overwhelming.
The size of the field, the noise and excitement from the crowd and the pressure of the state’s biggest stage can be a challenge.
For Regina junior Annalee Bartels the atmosphere at the state meet has the opposite effect.
“The energy here is amazing and that helps,” Bartels said. “Everyone cheering, that atmosphere, all of that helps.”
Bartels has the results to back up that claim.
The Regina junior claimed her second state medal in as many appearances at the state meet on Saturday placing 12th in the Class 1A race.
Bartels was fifth in her first appearance at state last season.
“I felt really good, I didn’t feel like I was at state all the pressure and everything it didn’t hit me,” Bartels said. “It felt really good.”
Bartels came within a second of her state meet time from last season on Saturday finishing in 19:50.4.
It was the first time Bartels had broken the 20-minute mark this season and came after she won the state qualifying meet in 20:48.1.
“I was really happy about it,” Bartels said. “I went under 20 for the first time this season and I was really happy about that.”
The 12th place finish by Bartels helped Regina to a top-five team finish for the second consecutive season.
Logan-Magnolia won its second consecutive team title with 112 points while Hudson was second with 133 followed by AHSTW with 142, Aplington-Parkersburg with 146 and Regina with 150.
Freshman Mya Whitaker was 35th overall for Regina in 20:41.1 and senior Kennedy Scott was 44th in 20:53.4.
“The big goal is getting to state, running at state is just for fun,” Bartels said. “It’s about having run today and just trying to run your best.”
Peyton Pogge of Tri-Center won the individual title in 18:45.4 after finishing runner-up last season.
Last season champion Emma Lucas of Bedford was the only runner in 1A to go under 19:24.
On Saturday five runners posted times of better than 19:03 including four runners that broke the 19-minute mark.
Bartels time of 19:50.4 was one second off her fifth-place time from a year ago and was 1.2 seconds off a spot in the top 10.
“I think being here last year helped,” Bartels said. “I felt like I knew the course better and just being a little more familiar helped me.”
Regina freshman Joe Maley had a strong state meet debut in the boys race finishing 32nd in 17:26.
Madrid won the boys title with 74 points while Nodaway Valley was second with 107 and Calamus-Wheatland was third with 118.
