Ayana Lindsey still has two years of high school softball remaining but the City High standout has already made her college decision.
One of the top players in the state, Lindsey verbally committed to play softball at Northwestern on Thursday, announcing her decision via posts on social media.
“It is with a tremendous amount of humility and excitement that I announce my decision to verbally commit to play softball at Northwestern,” Lindsey wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to my incredible support system of family, friends, teammates and coaches that made this opportunity possible.”
Already a three-year starter Lindsey solidified her status as one of the best players in the state with a breakthrough sophomore season last summer.
Lindsey earned first-team all-state honors for the first time after ranking in the top five in Class 5A in home runs, stolen bases, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and ERA.
The huge season from Lindsey helped City High to its first MVC title since 1998 and the best state tournament finish in program history.
One of the most versatile players in Iowa, Lindsey played primarily shortstop and pitcher last season after playing centerfield earlier in her career.
Lindsey posted a 21-4 record and 1.33 ERA in 162 2/3 innings last season striking out 172 and walking 50.
At the plate she led 5A with 18 home runs and 73 runs while hitting .463 from the leadoff spot in the Little Hawk lineup.
Lindsey also stole 34 bases and drove in 36 runs last season.
