Boys Cross Country Roundup: Liberty High Makes History by Qualifying For State Meet

The past three seasons have been filled with milestones and historic moments for the Liberty High cross country team.
Liberty High made a little more history on Thursday at the Class 4A state qualifying meet at Marshalltown Community College.
The Lightning secured the first state appearance for a team sport in school history on Thursday with a third-place finish at the 4A state qualifier.
Bowen Gryp and Jack Kinzer placed fifth and sixth respective as Liberty High finished third with 62 points.
Class 4A seventh-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie won the team title with 33 points followed by eighth-ranked Johnston with 45.
Liberty High, which entered ranked No. 10 in Class 4A, finished 56 points in front of fourth-place Ankeny for the final state qualifying spot.
Gryp placed fifth in 16:33.2 while Kinzer was right on his heels in sixth in a time of 16:33.5.
Senior Peter Woodward finished 16th in 16:52 and Caleb Schillinger was 17th in 16:53.7.

West High Returns to State Meet
West High put three runners in the top 10 in a runner-up team finish at the Class 4A state qualifying meet on Thursday at Southeast Polk High School.
Sophomore Nicolo Schianchi led a trio of top-10 finishers for the Trojans placing seventh in 17:02.5 as ninth-ranked West High finished with 64 points.
Second-ranked West Des Moines Dowling won the team title with 31 points while No. 11 Southeast Polk was third with 70 points.
Sophomore Alex McKane placed eighth in a time of 17:05.2 while Ken Wilbur was ninth in 17:07 for West High.

City High’s Washburn Secures Spot at State Meet
City High freshman Ford Washburn secured a spot at the state meet with a seventh-place finish at the Class 4A state qualifier at Birdsall Park in Cedar Falls on Thursday.
Washburn finished in a time of 16:36 to earn his spot at the state meet while City High placed fourth and missed qualifying for the state meet by one point.
Class 4A fifth-ranked Cedar Falls won the team title with 47 points while sixth-ranked Ames was second with 61 and Cedar Rapids Kennedy was third with 92 points.
City High placed fourth with 93 and Cedar Rapids Washington was fifth with 105.
