Regina Pounds Jesup 35-6 To Extend Winning Streak To Seven

IOWA CITY – Regina struck early and often against an overmatched Jesup team on Friday and the end result was a 35-6 victory at home, and a winning streak that has now reached seven games.
The Regals did all of their scoring in the first half, including putting up 28 points in the second quarter, while improving to 7-1 on the season.
“We were really methodical, I think we scored on every possession (in the first half),” said Regina head coach Marv Cook. “It was kind of workmanlike.”
“Jesup did some good things and tried to cause us problems. They put seven in the box and played a two shell in the back, and kind of forced us to be patient with some of the passing stuff.”
Junior quarterback Ashton Cook threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers, with each scoring strike covering 21 yards.
Levi Quinlan caught the first 21-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, while Alec Wick and Nick Hein caught their touchdown passes in the second quarter.
The victory now sets up the much-anticipated showdown with top-ranked and undefeated Dike-New Hartford next Friday on the road.
“Obviously, they’re extremely well coached and they’re the number one ranked team right now in Class 1A,” Marv Cook said of Dike-New Hartford. “You can tell when you watch them on film that they know what they’re doing. They have eleven guys on the field that always know what they’re supposed to be doing and they do it extremely well.”
“So it’s going to be a great challenge for us. We’re trying and win the district, but also look ahead towards the playoffs.”
Ashton Cook, who is Marv Cook's son, completed 17-of-24 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns, with most of his passing yards coming in the first two quarters.
Wick continued on his torrid pace with six catches for 105 yards, while Josh Dutchik had four catches for 32 yards.
Jesup scored its only touchdown of the game on a long pass play against the Regina reserves in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter.
Declan McCoy also returned a fumble three yards for a touchdown to complete Regina's scoring.
Quinlan led Regina in rushing with 41 yards on six carries, while junior Theo Kolie finished with 29 yards on six carries.
“They were sticking the box on us,” Marv Cook said.
Regina's only loss came in the season opener against Class 3A power Cedar Rapids Xavier by a score of 35-0 at Xavier.
Marv Cook wasn't discouraged after the loss, however, because he believed that his team would learn from it, and he also took into account the level of competition.
Cook had reason to feel optimistic, considering his team is undefeated since losing in the season opener.
Regina is on a mission to get back in the playoffs after a rare miss last season.
“Even last year, it never felt like we weren't a top eight or ten team in Class 1A,” Marv Cook said. “We had a bunch of guys hurt early, and now we've got guys healthy and you can see what they do.”
