The annual Your Prep Sports softball team honors 13 of the top area players for their performance on the diamond this season.

This year’s team consists of all-state and all-conference players from seven different schools as well as Division I recruits, state tournament participants and school record holder.

There are nine repeat selections from last year’s Your Prep Sports area squad on the 13-member team that includes just three seniors.

City High sophomore Ayana Lindsey is the team captain after helping the Little Hawks to a third-place finish at the Class 5A state tournament.

Lindsey led Class 5A with 18 home runs and 73 runs scored and ranked fifth in 5A with a 1.33 ERA.

2019 Your Prep Sports Softball Team

*P – Ayana Lindsey, Soph., City High: A breakthrough sophomore season thrust Lindsey into the conversation as one of the top all-around players in the state. Lindsey was named Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division player of the year and earned first team all-state honors for the first time after leading 5A with 18 home runs and 73 runs scored. The sophomore ranked in the top five in 5A in stolen bases (34), ERA (1.33) and strikeouts (172) while establishing herself as one of the state’s best. Lindsey hit .463 with 36 RBI from her leadoff spot and went 21-4 while pitching a team-high 162 2/3 innings.

P – Katie Bracken, Sr., Regina: One of the top players in Class 2A over the past several seasons Bracken capped a stellar career with her best season. Bracken earned first-team all-state honors for the third straight season after leading Regina in batting average (.362), doubles (8), home runs (5), RBI (21) and walks (17) while serving as the ace of the Regal pitching staff. Among the top pitchers in 2A over the past two seasons Bracken posted a career-best 1.45 ERA while going 16-12 and ranking sixth in 2A with 223 strikeouts. Bracken walked just 19 in 178 2/3 innings the third fewest walks among 2A pitchers with at least 100 innings.

C – Carey Koenig, Soph., City High: Another first-time first team all-state honoree, Koenig had her own breakout sophomore season as she cemented her status as the top backstops in the state. Koenig ranked in the top-five in Class 5A in home runs, RBI and walks while leading City High with a .466 batting average.Among the top defensive catchers in the state, Koenig put up the best offensive numbers of her career ranking fifth in 5A with 13 home runs, third with 54 RBI and fifth with 23 walks. Koenig had 15 doubles and posted a .872 slugging percentage which ranked ninth best in 5A.

INF – Ella Cook, Soph., City High: Already a three-year starter Cook had her own strong sophomore season hitting .348 with five home runs and 41 RBI. Always, a strong hitter and excellent infielder the biggest breakthrough for Cook came in the circle where she posted a 14-4 record and 2.41 ERA in 104 2/3 innings.

INF – Brooke Bormann, Jr., City High: Bormann proved to be a valuable asset on the infield for City High shifting between shortstop and first base during a historic season for the Little Hawks. In addition to her defensive versatility Bormann had the best offensive season of her career hitting .346 with 12 doubles and 25 RBI. Bormann scored 24 runs and was second on the team with 11 stolen bases.

INF – Hilary Wilson, 8th, Solon: In her first season of varsity action Wilson had an immediate impact leading Solon with a .410 batting average and 21 doubles. Wilson ranked second on the team with 33 runs, 38 RBI and five home runs and posted a .698 slugging percentage in her rookie season.

INF – Kiahna Hill, Jr., West High: A versatile offensive weapon Hill earned second team all-state honors after leading the Women of Troy in eight offensive categories. Hill hit a team-high .410 with three home runs and 22 RBI and flashed a wide array of skills going 21-for-21 in stolen base attempts and posting a 1.04 OPS.

OF – Taylor Ryan, Sr., Solon: An Iowa recruit, Ryan hit .382 and ranked seventh in Class 3A with 48 runs while helping Solon to a 23-16 record and a spot in the Class 3A regional finals. Ryan drove in 16 runs from her leadoff spot and led the Spartans with 33 stolen bases.

OF – Brylee Klosterman, Jr., Liberty High: Iowa recruit cemented her status as one of the best hitters in the state ranking second in Class 4A with 68 hits while batting a career-best .489. Klosterman ranked third in 4A with 19 doubles and second with five triples and posted team highs with 42 runs, 35 RBI, 21 BB and 13 stolen bases.

OF – Nicki Henson, Soph., West Branch: A career .465 hitter, Henson earned all-state honors and led West Branch in hits for the third consecutive season as a sophomore. Henson matched her career-high with 58 hits while batting a team-best .487 on her way to second-team all-state honors. The sophomore centerfielder scored 42 runs and stole 21 bases.

OF – Sydney Fellows, Jr., City High: Fellows earned all-state honors for the first time after hitting a career-high .385 and ranking fifth in 5A with 18 doubles. A third-team all-state selection in Class 5A, Fellows had 24 extra-base hits with two triples and four home runs en route to a .637 slugging percentage. Fellows scored 30 runs and drove in 34 from her cleanup spot in the City High lineup.

UTIL – Ainsley Schrock, Jr., Clear Creek Amana: A first-team all-WAMAC West division and third-team all-state pick in Class 4A, Schrock had a big bounce back season as a junior. The Clipper catcher hit a team-high .430 with seven home run and 17 RBI and struck out just four times in 110 plate appearances.

UTIL – Skyler Stookey, Sr., Solon: One of the top power hitters in Class 3A, Stookey ranked in the top-10 in 3A in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage while earning second-team all-state honors. The senior catcher was second in 3A with 14 home runs and led Solon with 43 RBI and a .831 slugging percentage.
