The Your Prep Sports area built on its reputation for producing some of the top soccer teams in the state this season.

Regina and West High both reached the state title match with the Regals claiming their third consecutive Class 1A title.

The third annual Your Prep Sports boys soccer team is filled with players that produced that postseason success with six players on the 13-member team coming from teams that reached the state title match.

This year that honors the top players in the area for their performance this season features players from seven different teams and includes five repeat selections from last season.

For the second consecutive season West High senior Gada Ambo is the captain of the Your Prep Sports area squad after scoring 12 goals and adding seven assists while leading the Trojans to the state title match.

Senior, West High

Ambo was named Mississippi Valley Conference divisional player of the year and was a first team all-state pick by Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association for the second consecutive season after directing West High to the 3A state title match.

The senior forward scored four goals in a pair of state tournament wins helping West High reach the 3A title match and finished with a team-high 16 goals and seven assists this season.

Ambo had 34 goals and 14 assists the past two seasons.

Alec Wick

Sophomore, Regina

Followed up an impressive freshman season with a breakthrough sophomore campaign in which he ranked fifth in Class 1A with 31 goals.

Wick did more than just score, leading Regina with 11 assists on his way to earning first team all-state honors from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

For the second consecutive season Wick did his best work on the state’s biggest stage scoring two goals and adding an assist in three state tournament matches on his way to being named captain of the 1A all-tournament team.

Brody Schilling

Junior, West High

Led West High in goals and assists while helping the Trojans to a Class 4A runner-up finish.

Schilling scored a team-high 13 goals and tied for the team lead with seven assists directing West High to an 18-2 record and earning first team all-state honors from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

The 13 goals were a career-high for Schilling and included a four-goal outburst in a win over Linn-Mar.

Adam Englebrecht

Junior, City High

Among the top all-around players in the Mississippi Valley Conference Englebrecht earned first team MVC all-division honors for the second consecutive season after leading City High to a 12-4 record and a Class 3A district final berth.

Englebrecht ranked second on the team with a career-high six goals and led the Little Hawks with two assists after scoring two goals and adding three assists last season as a sophomore.

Kolby Godbolt

Sophomore, Liberty High

After having his freshman season cut short by an injury Godbolt showed what he could do in a full season of action leading Liberty High in both goals and assists as a sophomore.

Godbolt scored a team-high 17 goals and tied with teammate Avi Ajavon for the team lead with 13 assists on his way to earning honorable mention all-state honors from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Joey Kuehn

Senior, West High

Statistics don’t tell the story for Kuehn who scored one goal this season and finished his career with two goals and an assist.

Instead it was the work Kuehn did on the defensive end of the field that stood out earning him first team all-state from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

A two-time first-team all-divisional pick in the powerful Mississippi Valley Conference, Kuehn was among the top defenders in the state helping West High post 10 shutouts in 20 matches this season on its way to a Class 3A runner-up finish.

John Geerdes

Senior, City High

One of the top weapons in a balanced City High attack Geerdes ranked third on the team with five goals and added an assist while helping City High to a 12-4 mark and a spot in the 3A district title match.

Geerdes was a first-team Mississippi Division pick in the Mississippi Valley Conference and was one of five City High players with at least four goals this season.

Ayi Ajavon

Junior, Liberty High

Ajavon followed up an impressive debut campaign last year with another strong season earning second-team all-Valley division honors in his first season playing in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

After leading the Lightning with 19 goals and 13 assists last season Ajavon nearly matched those number this season in one of the top conferences in the state.

Ajavon ranked second on the team with 13 goals and tied for the team lead with 13 assists while helping Liberty High to a 7-11 record and its first ever berth in a district title match.

Josh Dutchik

Junior, Regina

Dutchik remained unbeaten in state tournament matches stretching his career mark in state tournament matches to 9-0 while being selected to the Class 1A all-tournmaent team for third year in a row.

In nine career state title matches Dutchik has allowed just three goals after posting a shutout in the 1A title game.

One of the top keepers in Class 1A, Dutchik made 174 saves and allowed 24 goals this season on his way to being named an honorable mention all-state pick by Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Luke Yetley

Senior, Solon

A two-time first-team all-state selection Yetley capped a brilliant prep career with 41 goals and 20 assists.

Yetley helped Solon to a 15-7 record this season scoring 13 goals for the second consecutive season and adding six assists while earning first-team all-WAMAC East Division honors.

Over the past three seasons Solon won 46 matches and played in three consecutive district finals with Yetley in the lineup.

Blake Malli

Senior, Clear Creek Amana

In a season where half of its matches were decided by a single goal it was Clear Creek Amana’s senior goal that kept coming up big.

Malli posted nine shutouts in goal this season on his way to earning first-team all-WAMAC West Division and honorable mention all-state honors from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

The senior keeper made 95 saves and allowed 15 goals in 16 matches but held opponents to just seven goals over the final 14 matches of the season as the Clippers went 12-2 during that stretch.

Max Petersen

Senior, Regina

Another player that didn’t put up stats but was imperative to the success of a state finalist Petersen was a defensive stalwart during the Regals’ run to a third consecutive 1A title.

Petersen had just one assist this season but played a key role in helping Regina post 13 shutouts in an 18-6 season that ended with a 1-0 win over Waterloo Columbus in the 1A championship match.

Peyton Miller

Freshman, West Branch

The Bears exceeded expectations in the first season in program history and the play of Miller was one of the biggest reasons for that success.

Miller led the Bears with seven goals and tied for the team lead with six assists as West Branch posted a 7-5 record in its first varsity season.
