Baseball Roundup: West High Sweeps Second-ranked Western Dubuque

Class 4A third-ranked West High swept second-ranked Western Dubuque in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader on Friday in Peosta winning the opener 5-4 and taking the nightcap 5-1.
The sweep ran West High’s winning streak to six and the Trojans improved to 20-5 on the season and 15-5 in MVC play with their 13th win in the past 14 games.
Western Dubuque dropped to 21-5 on the season and 16-4 in conference play.
Alex Swack picked up the win in the opener allowing three runs on two hits while striking out six in three innings of relief.
Noah Aanestad started and allowed two runs on three hits and struck out three in 3 2/3 innings.
Nick Biancuzzo had two hits and scored a run while Ryan Cooper had a hit and drove in two to pace West High in game one.
Ben Madden had a hit, drove in a run and scored a run and Marcus Morgan and Owen McAreavy each doubles and scored a run.
Casey Marvin tossed three scoreless innings to open game two and Ben Vander Leest earned the win allowing one run on one hit in three innings of relif.
Marcus Morgan worked the final inning to secure the win.
Madden doubled and scored two runs and Cooper went 3-for-4 with two RBI for West High.

Liberty High Splits With Dubuque Senior
Keian Secrist tossed a gem in the opener to help Liberty High split a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader with Dubuque Senior on Friday in Dubuque.
Secrist allowed two runs on three hits and struck out nine in seven innings as Liberty High won the opener 3-2 in eight innings.
Dubuque Senior rallied to win the nightcap 12-8 to salvage a split and move to 10-13 on the season and 9-11 in MVC play.
Liberty High is 13-11 on the season and 10-8 in conference play after the split on Friday.
Secrist also had a pair of hits in the opener and Jacob Norris went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Lightning.
Jack Kinzer drove in two runs in the game one win while Alec Boldt and Ethan O’Donnell scored runs.
Brady Houser worked a scoreless eighth inning to earn the save.
Liberty High had 13 hits in the nightcap but it wasn’t enough to secure the sweep.
Isaac Bender, Secrist, Boldt, Sam Funke and Cayden Duhaime all had two hits in game two.
Duhaime, Boldt and Secrist drove in two runs in game two with Secrist leading the way with a double and a home run.

City High Drops Two in Top-10 Matchup
Class 4A seventh-ranked Linn-Mar swept No. 10 City High in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader on Friday at Mercer Park in Iowa City winning the opener 2-0 and taking the nightcap 7-6.
City High dropped to 18-8 on the season and 12-8 in MVC play while Linn-Mar improved to 20-5 and 17-3 in conference play with its 11th win in 12 games.
Brady Herzic took the loss for City High in the opener allowing two runs on five hits in a complete game effort.
City High had seven hits led by Carter Seaton and Zach Kuepker with two hits each but couldn’t push across a run.
A four-run seventh-inning rally wasn’t quite enough in the nightcap as the Little Hawks came up a run shy.
Liam McComas went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs in game two while Kuepker was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI.

West Branch Knocks Off Highland
West Branch hammered 13 hits on its way to a 10-6 win over Highland in a non-conference contest on Friday in West Branch.
The Bears improved to 12-5 on the season with the win while Highland dropped to 10-8.
Pete Espensen picked up the win allowing five runs on four hits while striking out four in 5 2/3 innings.
Jaden Hierseman went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs and Trey Eagle went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored to lead West Branch.
Tanner Lukavsky and Espensen each had two hits and scored three runs while Mitchell Knoop went 2-for-4 with a solo home run.
