IOWA CITY – With only one senior on its roster it wasn’t a long senior night ceremony at West High on Tuesday.
It may not have been a big senior night program but it certainly was a memorable day for the Women of Troy’s lone senior.
Ryleigh Mulcahey tossed a perfect game as West High completed a doubleheader sweep of Cedar Rapids Washington with a 12-0 three-inning win in the nightcap at West High.
“Obviously that’s kind of the picture-perfect senior night,” Mulcahey said. “It was special for me but it was a full team effort, they all wanted to help me win to make this night special.”
Mulcahey retired all nine batters she faced on Tuesday, six via strikeout, as West High ran its winning streak to eight.
West High won the opener 14-2 in four innings and improved to 12-16 on the season and 8-14 with the sweep.
“It boosts our confidence in a great way,” Mulcahey said. “This is a great way to start building up momentum for the postseason.”
Seven different players had a hit in the opener as West High hammered out 13 hits in a 14-2 win.
Burbidge led the 13-hit attack going 3-for-3 and driving in three runs and also earned the win in the opener.
“I think we’ve all got our timing down,” Burbidge said. “We’ve really focused on once we get runners on base we are getting them around which is a big thing that we weren’t doing before.”
West High broke the game open with seven-run second inning in which it sent 11 batters to the plate.
The Women of Troy then scored five runs in the fourth inning to end the game via the run rule.
Eighth-graders Ella Nelson, Tamiah Teran and Lexi Nash all had RBI singles in the opener.
“Part of it is we are swinging the bat all the way through the lineup,” West High coach Barb Lynn said. “We have some youth in our lineup and they needed a little bit of transition time and we are starting to get things consistent throughout the lineup and that really helps.”
The nightcap proved to be the perfect ending to a day that honored Mulcahey.
The senior right-hander didn’t allow a ball to be hit out of the infield while retiring nine consecutive Warriors.
“I was just kind of flowing today,” Mulcahey said. “I was hitting my spots and working the ball around.”
Mulcahey struck out two batters in each inning, including the final two she faced.
“It’s always awesome when senior night goes smoothly and the seniors play excellent,” Lynn said. “Everyone had fun and it was a great senior night.”
West High provided more than enough support for Mulcahey.
The Women of Troy scored four runs in the first inning and five more in the second before ending the game via the run rule with committing an out in the third.
Rylee Goodfellow had a two-run single in the third inning and Kiahna Hill ended the game with a two-run inside-the-park home run.
“I think we have started to fully realized our potential as a team and we are starting to meet that potential,” Mulcahey said. “We have a good lineup going and we are starting to really get into a groove.”
