Baseball Roundup: City High Bounces Back With Sweep of CR Washington

City High bounced back from a pair of losses to Cedar Rapids Prairie last Friday with a sweep of Cedar Rapids Washington on Monday in Cedar Rapids.
The Little Hawks won the opener 12-6 and took the nightcap 3-0 to improve to 16-5 on the season and 11-5 in MVC play while Cedar Rapids Washington dropped to 6-14 and 3-13 in conference play.
Sam Lewers and Gable Mitchel each had two hits and drove in three runs in the opener.
Mitchell doubled and tripled while Lewers had a double and both players scored twice.
Cade Hanrahan had two hits and scored two runs while Ben Steve had a hit and drove in three runs.
Carter Seaton went 2-of-3 and scored two runs. Reese Hayden picked up the win allowing one run on six hits while striking out two in two innings of relief.
Garrett Bormann tossed a three-hit shutout in the nightcap as City High completed the sweep.
Bormann didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven in a 74-pitch, complete game victory.
Liam McComas went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for City High while Ben Steve had two hits and scored a run and Bormann added two hits.
Mitchell added a hit and scored a run and Kolbe Schnoebelen had a hit.

Frey Tosses Gem in Split With CR Kennedy
Nolan Frey tossed a complete game in the opener as Liberty High split a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader with Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Monday in Cedar Rapids.
Frey allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits while striking out six and didn’t walk a batter as Liberty High won the opener 6-2.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy took the nightcap 4-1 to salvage a split as Liberty High moved to 11-7 on the season and 9-5 in MVC play while the Cougars improved to 5-13 and 5-11 in conference games.
Isaac Bender led the way for Liberty High in the game-one win going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Keian Secrist had a triple, drove in three runs and scored a run and Nolan Frey and Alec Boldt each had a hit and drove in a run.
Secrist had an RBI and Bender had a hit and scored a run in the nightcap.
Jacob Norris took the loss allowing four runs on three hits while striking out three and walking seven.

West High Splits With CR Jefferson
West High split a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader with Cedar Rapids Jefferson on Monday at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids dropping the opener 4-1 and winning the nightcap 10-2.
Class 4A third-ranked West High moved to 15-5 on the season and 11-5 in MVC play while Cedar Rapids Jefferson dropped to 9-11 and 7-9 in conference games.
Ben Madden had a double and scored a run while Jason Strunk had a triple and Ryan Cooper had a hit and drove in a run to account for all the West High hits in the opener.
Noah Aanestad took the loss, allowing four runs on one hit while walking three in one inning.
Ben Vander Leest worked five innings of two-hit relief.
Casey Marvin earned the win for West High in game two allowing one run on four hits while striking out three and walking two on 5 2/3 innings.
Chase Calderwood, Cooper, Madden and Nick Biancizzo all had two hits for West High while Biancuzzo, Madden and Marcus Morgan all drove in two runs.

Clear Creek Amana split a WAMAC doubleheader with Benton Community on Monday in Van Horne dropping the opener 7-4 and winning the nightcap 13-2.
The Clippers improved to 9-10 on the season and 6-8 in WAMAC play with the split while Benton Community moved to 5-12 and 4-10 in conference play.
Camden Smyka went 2-for-4 with a double a triple and an RBI in the opener and Grant Jensen had two hits, drove in a run and scored a run.
TJ Bollers and Ben Swails each had a hit and scored a run.
Smyka took the loss in game one allowing seven runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking three in five innings.
Clear Creek Amana pounded 14 hits in the second game while Sam Young earned the win allowing one unearned run on two hits while striking out four in six innings.
Young also went 3-for-3 with two runs for the Clippers while Smyka had two hits including a two-run home run and drove in four runs.
Gavin Zillyette had a three-run double and Stirlen Roberson, Brock Reade and Bollers all had two hits.

West Branch Splits Pair With Mid-Prairie
West Branch split a River Valley Conference South Division doubleheader with Mid-Prairie on Monday in West Branch winning the opener 4-2 and dropping the nightcap 7-0.
The Bears moved to 8-4 on the season and 8-3 in RVC play while Mid-Prairie is now 8-6 on the season and 6-4 in conference games.
West Branch used a four-run sixth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit in the opener.
Ted Bridges had a two-run double and Matt Whaley added a run-scoring single in the four-run West Branch sixth.
Gavin Hierseman also had a hit and scored a run in the sixth and finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Bridges struck out four in two innings of hitless relief to earn the win in game on.
Matt Paulsen started and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out four in five innings.
Mid-Prairie junior Brad Tornow struck out 12 in a four-hit shutout as the Golden Hawks salvaged a split with a win in the nightcap.
Brad Hunger, Brady Lukavsky and Paulsen all doubled in game two and Tanner Lukavsky had a single in the 7-0 loss.

Regina Earns Split at Durant
Regina battled back to earn a split with Durant in a River Valley Conference South Division doubleheader on Monday in Durant.
Regina dropped the opener 10-8 and trailed 2-0 in game two rallying for an 8-6 win.
The Regals improved to 7-11 on the season and 4-7 in RVC play while Durant moved to 5-9 and 4-9 in RVC action.
Declan McCoy and Paul Keller each had two hits for Regina in the opener while Caden Smith and Scott Arendt each had a hit and scored two runs.
Chase Becker, Smith, McCoy, Joey Molony and Kyle Schooley all drove in a run for the Regals.
Jack Tierney and McCoy each went 2-for-3 in the nightcap while Arendt drove in a pair of runs and scored twice.
Keller and Becker each had a hit and drove in a run in game two.
Kyle Schooley started and earned the win allowing two runs on one hit in three innings. Arendt, McCoy, Jack Brandt and Smith teamed up to allowing four runs on five hits in four innings of relief.

Solon Drops Two 1-0 Games at Central DeWitt
A Class 3A top-five doubleheader between Solon and Central DeWitt lived up to the hype on Monday.
It was the Sabers that came away with a pair of wins.
Class 3A third-ranked Central DeWitt stayed perfect on the season with a pair of 1-0 extra-inning wins over the Spartans moving to 18-0 on the season and 14-0 in WAMAC action.
Fifth-ranked Solon got impressive pitching performances from Lucas Walker and Cam Miller but couldn’t get a win while dropping to 13-5 on the year and 10-3 in WAMAC action.
Walker was excellent in the opener allowing just one run on five hits while striking out nine and walking two in 7 2/3 innings.
Solon had six hits but couldn’t push across a run against Central DeWitt starter Lucas Bixby.
Miller and Jax Flynn each had two hits while Cole Arduser and Nolan Pattison each had a hit.
Miller tossed nine scoreless innings in the night cap as Central DeWitt needed 10 innings to earn its second consecutive 1-0 win.
Miller struck out nine and walked one while allowing seven hits.
Sully Steen took the loss for Solon allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th.
Chris McSweeney had both of the Solon hits in game two and also stole a base.
