Ambo Named MVC Divisional Player of the Year For Second Straight Season

On Tuesday Gada Ambo will go for the state’s biggest prize when West High faces top-ranked Waukee in the Class 3A state title match.
Monday Ambo was awarded for the work he did during the regular season.
Ambo was named Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division athlete of the year on Monday when the conference announced its postseason awards.
It was the second consecutive season Ambo has earned divisional player of the year honors after direction West High to an unbeaten conference season and Valley Division title.
Senior Zach Albright was named Valley Division keeper of the year and West High had four players named to the Valley Division first team.
Ambo led the all-division honorees for West High after scoring a team-high 16 goals through 19 matches this season.
The senior forward has also added seven assists which is tied for the most on the team.
Albright earned keeper of the year honors after making 39 saves and allowing just seven goals while helping West High post 10 shutouts, including seven in MVC play.
Senior defender Joey Kuehn was a first-team all-division selection for the second straight season while Brody Schilling and Roberto Machado each earned first-team MVC honors for the first time.
Schilling ranked second on the team with 13 goals and seven assists while earning first-team Valley Division honors after being named to the second team a year ago.
Machado ranked second on the team with five assists.
Junior Micah Frisbie and sophomores Yulong Shao, Andy Lu and Marko Migambi were all second-team selections for West High while Tomas Sanchez and Matthew McDonnell both earned honorable mention honors.
Liberty High junior Ayi Ajavon was named to the Valley Division second team after scoring 13 goals and adding 13 assists for the Lightning in their first season in the MVC conference.
Sophomores Kolby Godbolt and Jacob Mascardo were each honorable mention selections for Liberty High.
City High had three players named to the Mississippi Division first team.
Juniors Adam Engelbrecht and Quincy Ott each earned first-team honors along with senior John Geerdes.
Englebrecht had six goals and led the Little Hawks with two assists while Geerdes had five goals and an assist and Ott had one goal.
Senior Lucas Ribble and junior Temesgen Schumm were both second-team picks for City High and senior Ben Steve and junior Acheke Mausa were each honorable mention honorees.
