Baseball Roundup: Solon wins No. 500 for McSweeney, West Branch knocks off No. 3 Cascade

The Spartans scored five runs on five walks in the first frame of a five-inning 10-0 win over Mid-Prairie, Solon’s fifth victory of the season.
But the big number on Friday night was 500, as coach Keith McSweeney became the 72nd Iowa high school baseball coach to join the 500-win club.
A big first inning helped McSweeney get there. An inning extended by a dropped third strike with two outs and just one runner on base. After two more walks and an error, Nolan Pattison drove in a run with the game’s first hit to give Solon a 4-0 lead.
The Spartans led 7-0 in the fifth inning when Dillon Jeworrek, Cam Miller, and Adam Bock strung together one-out singles. Jax Flynn reached on an error as the final two runs crossed the plate, giving Solon the 10-0 advantage.
Miller finished 2-3 with a walk and three RBI. Ryan Geistkemper was credited with the win, allowing two hits and a walk over four innings with four strikeouts.
McSweeney is one of 18 active coaches with 500 wins, with a career record of 500-258.

Bears come from behind at Cascade
Mitch Knoop delivered the go-ahead two-RBI single in the sixth inning for West Branch in a 4-3 win at 2A No. 3 Cascade.
The Bears trailed by a run in the top of the sixth when Brad Hunger reached on an error and Peter Espensen singled. Ted Bridges advanced the runners with a groundout and Knoop came up with the clutch hit.
Bridges then took over on the mound and retired the next six batters in order with four strikeouts.
Brady Lukavsky and Matt Paulsen led off the game on the right foot with back to back singles and Espensen drove in the game’s first run with a sac fly to right.
Tanner Lukavsky doubled and scored on a balk to put West Branch ahead 2-0 in the second.
Brady and Tanner Lukavsky each finished with two hits.
The Bears have won three in a row since a 1-0 loss to Wilton on opening day.

City High Sweeps Waterloo East in MVC Doubleheader
City High swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Waterloo East on Friday winning the opening 15-0 in four innings and taking the nightcap 5-3 at Mercer Park in Iowa City.
The Little Hawks improved to 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in MVC play while Waterloo East dropped to 1-11 and 0-6 in conference games.
Garrett Bormann earned the win in the opener allowing three hits and striking out six in four innings.
Gable Mitchell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored two runs and DJ Heck was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI to lead City High.
Reese Hayden had a hit, drove in a run and scored twice, Liam McComas had a double and an RBI and Sam Lewers tripled and drove in three runs.
In the nightcap Zach Kuepker homered, doubled and drove in four runs while Bormann went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Mitchell picked up the win in relief striking out five and allowing two hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Beckman Sweeps CCA
Clear Creek Amana dropped both ends of a WAMAC doubleheader in Tiffin on Friday falling to Dyersville Beckman 10-8 in nine innings in game one and 13-7 in the nightcap.
The Clippers dropped to 3-4 on the season and 1-3 in conference play while Dyersville Beckman improved to 6-1 and 4-0 in WAMAC contests.
In game one Camden Smyka went 3-for-5 with an RBI and TJ Bollers was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a 2-run homer.
Parker Smith drove in two runs and scored twice and Cody Ogden had a hit, scored a run and drove in a run.
Ben Swails took the loss allowing two runs on three hits while striking out 10 in four innings of relief.
Brock Reade started and gave up eight runs, three earned on nine hits in five innings.
In the nightcap Grant Jensen took the loss allowing eight runs, three earned, on four hits in four innings.
Bollers, Jensen and Swails all went 1-for-3 with a run and Smyka scored a run and drove in a run.
