West High Doubles Team of Moonjely and Koch Advances to State Semifinal

Audrey Koch and Jessica Moonjely are halfway to a state doubles title.
The West High duo stormed into the semifinals at the Class 2A state tennis tournament with a pair of impressive wins on Wednesday at the Bettendorf Tennis Center.
Koch and Moonjely improved to 17-0 on the season with back-to-back straight set wins to secure a spot in the 2A semifinals on Thursday.
The top-seeded West High tandem defeated Mackenzie Lange and Kylie Housenga of Clinton 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round.
Koch and Moonjely advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-1 quarterfinal win over the Johnston tandem of Julia Heil and Dasha Svitashev.
Moonjely and Koch will take on the Urbandale squad of Brooke Dannenfeldt and Mylea Cole on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the semifinals.
Cedar Falls Krisha and Mira Keeran will play the West Des Moines Dowling team of Kaylyn Chleborad and Allison Szalay in the other semifinals with the winners meeting in the state title match at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Moonjely and Koch are attempting to become the third different West High doubles tandem to win a state title in the last three seasons.
Emma Koch and Abby Jans won the 2A title in 2017 and Audrey Koch and Emma Koch won the 2A doubles title last season.
The West High doubles team of Vivian Mitchell and Caroline Mascardo went 1-2 in its state meet debut.
Mitchell and Mascardo lost to Kayla Nutt and Lauren Hird of Pleasant Valley 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round and rebounded with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tayler Bloom and Jordyn Gustafson of Ankeny Centennial in the consolation round.
The West High doubles team had their season end with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to the Johnston team of Heil and Svitashev in the consolation quarterfinals.
Sophomore Caroline Chandler went 1-2 in singles play on Wednesday.
Chandler defeated Jamie Knox of Cedar Falls 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round and then fell to Sofia Sockett of West Des Moines Dowling 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
She lost to Malina Amjadi of Cedar Falls 6-3, 6-7 1-0 in the consolation quarterfinals to end her season.
